A budget cycle trip across Cambodia

A budget cycle trip across Cambodia

Whilst travelling we have met a small number of cycle tourers. These are unique people who travel using specific touring bicycles designed to be more robust than your everyday bike. They use panniers to carry not only clothes but camping gear and a bicycle repair tools. When we spoke to them about their trips we were fascinated to hear how by simply changing your mode of transportation results in a completely different experience. We wanted a taste of the action….

Plans are made to be changed

Plans are made to be changed

Rich and I have been travelling now for just over seven months. We are just about to leave Laos and cross the border into Cambodia. We have seen and experienced so many wonderful things that when other travellers ask us what has been our favourite country so far it’s often very difficult for us to say. We must admit you do frequently have similar conversations when you travel. This is to be expected. Where are you from? Where have you…

Country Summary: Four and a Half Weeks in Myanmar

Country Summary: Four and a Half Weeks in Myanmar

Myanmar 2nd November – 4th December 2017 When we told people at home we were planning to visit Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, they asked us why? They wanted to know if it was safe and what there would be to see here. Within the travelling world however this is the perfect place to travel right now. Travellers kept saying it was one of their favourite countries and that it had a kind of magic. This country only properly opened…

Mawlamyine’s one and a half giant Buddhas

Mawlamyine’s one and a half giant Buddhas

When we first arrived in Myanmar we decided to explore the slightly lesser known region southeast of Yangon. This included Mawlamyine, a former capital during the British Burma period from 1827 to 1852. Today it is home to the Mon people and is an interesting place to see local industries whose products are shipped nationally and internationally due to the town proximity to the sea. We spent a day exploring the area around Mawlamyine and found a fantastic reclining Buddha…

Nepal and the Manaslu Trek 3rd October – 1st November 2017 Nepal was a bit out of the way when we were planning our route round South East Asia however we both confidently agreed straight away that this was a country we had to visit. After short listing some companies from online reviews we visited them all in person in Kathmandu….

Country Summary: Three Weeks in Japan

Country Summary: Three Weeks in Japan

Japan 9th September – 2nd October 2017 We spent three weeks in Japan. It is a beautiful country which surprisingly reminded me slightly of England because of its seasonal nature. We visited in early Autumn and in some places the leaves were already turning. Japanese culture however is something I have never experienced before and is so different to every other country I have visited. The country has a mix of a strong traditional history combined with modern technology. We…

Watching sumo in the heart of Japan

Watching sumo in the heart of Japan

Rich and I were very excited when we found out that our trip to Japan coincided with one of the six annual Sumo tournaments held across the country. Three of these are in Tokyo, whilst the others are in Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka. Each tournaments only last 15 days and so we were pretty lucky to have this opportunity. When the tickets were released one month before the start of the tournament we went online to buy them as quickly…

Emi climbs Mount Emei

Emi climbs Mount Emei

Fresh from climbing Mount Emei just a couple of days ago I wanted to share my ups and downs from the two day hike. I am not just talking physically, which there were a lot, but also mentally. When Rich first told me about the hike up Mount Emei, a mountain in the Sichuan province of China, I was pretty much sold from the off. The blogs we read not only spoke of a challenging but beautiful hike but…

Country Summary: One Month in Mongolia

Country Summary: One Month in Mongolia

Mongolia 10th July – 6th August 2017 Mongolia is an incredible country which I awmpressively managed to exceeded our already high expectations and provided some unforgettable experiences. The local people were exceptionally friendly, their nomadic culture was unique and unlike anything we have seen before and the steppe was staggeringly beautiful. Alongside this came difficult challenges. Transportation outside the capital was long, the roads were in a bad condition and when no public transport existed you had to rely on…

Country Summary: One Month in Russia

Country Summary: One Month in Russia

12th June – 10th July 2017 We have recently completed our month in Russia, the first country in our year of travel. During our time in Russia we have physically travelled an extremely long distance, starting in St.Petersburg and ending in Ulan Ude. The distance travelled has been amazing and is incomparable to any distance you can travel in England. We are now about 7000km from home and have crossed from Europe into Asia. During this first month we have seen stunning palaces…
