Country Summary: Three Weeks in Sri Lanka

Country Summary: Three Weeks in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka 27th February – 22nd March 2018 We spent just over three weeks in Sri Lanka; an island the size of Ireland. It’s just off the southern coast of India and yet feels infinitely calmer than its larger neighbour. Some people may still know it as Ceylon, a name used by the British during its period of colonisation from 1815 to 1948. The British weren’t however the first to colonise this little country and there are signs of both…

Country Summary: One Month in Cambodia

Country Summary: One Month in Cambodia

23rd January – 18th February 2018 Our one month in Cambodia has been clearly split into two parts. For the first two weeks we sampled the life of a cycle tourer. We bought bikes in Kratie and cycled south 435km to Kampot via Phnom Penh. You can read more about this in my blog ‘A budget cycle trip across Cambodia’. The second part followed our more traditional backpacker style. We learnt about Cambodia’s traumatic and yet recent past at the…

A budget cycle trip across Cambodia

A budget cycle trip across Cambodia

Whilst travelling we have met a small number of cycle tourers. These are unique people who travel using specific touring bicycles designed to be more robust than your everyday bike. They use panniers to carry not only clothes but camping gear and a bicycle repair tools. When we spoke to them about their trips we were fascinated to hear how by simply changing your mode of transportation results in a completely different experience. We wanted a taste of the action….

Country Summary: One Month in Laos

Country Summary: One Month in Laos

Laos 29th December 2017 – 23rd January 2018 It is often skipped during many people’s Southeast Asia travels however we still felt one month in Laos was only just enough to see this adventurous country. Laos is not known for its big temples, large bustling cities or beautiful coastline. However this landlocked country in the heart of Asia has some stunning scenery and some of the most friendly people. If you enjoy the outdoors this is the country for you…

Country Summary: One Month in Thailand (excl. Bangkok)

Thailand (excl. Bangkok) 4th – 29th December 2017 Rich and I both agree that this one month in Thailand has been clearly split into two parts. We spent two weeks in the South islands in the Trang and Krabi provinces soaking up some sun and enjoying the sand and sea for the first time in a long while. We then spent two weeks in Northern Thailand visiting Chiang Mai and the surrounding area. We soon realised Thailand is a big…

Country Summary: Four and a Half Weeks in Myanmar

Country Summary: Four and a Half Weeks in Myanmar

Myanmar 2nd November – 4th December 2017 When we told people at home we were planning to visit Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, they asked us why? They wanted to know if it was safe and what there would be to see here. Within the travelling world however this is the perfect place to travel right now. Travellers kept saying it was one of their favourite countries and that it had a kind of magic. This country only properly opened…

Mawlamyine’s one and a half giant Buddhas

Mawlamyine’s one and a half giant Buddhas

When we first arrived in Myanmar we decided to explore the slightly lesser known region southeast of Yangon. This included Mawlamyine, a former capital during the British Burma period from 1827 to 1852. Today it is home to the Mon people and is an interesting place to see local industries whose products are shipped nationally and internationally due to the town proximity to the sea. We spent a day exploring the area around Mawlamyine and found a fantastic reclining Buddha…

Country Summary: One Month in Nepal

Nepal and the Manaslu Trek 3rd October – 1st November 2017 Nepal was a bit out of the way when we were planning our route round South East Asia however we both confidently agreed straight away that this was a country we had to visit. We spent one month in Nepal which we split into three parts. The first stage was planning the trek. After short listing some companies from online reviews we visited them all in person in Kathmandu….

Country Summary: Three Weeks in Japan

Country Summary: Three Weeks in Japan

Japan 9th September – 2nd October 2017 We spent three weeks in Japan. It is a beautiful country which surprisingly reminded me slightly of England because of its seasonal nature. We visited in early Autumn and in some places the leaves were already turning. Japanese culture however is something I have never experienced before and is so different to every other country I have visited. The country has a mix of a strong traditional history combined with modern technology. We…

Watching sumo in the heart of Japan

Watching sumo in the heart of Japan

Rich and I were very excited when we found out that our trip to Japan coincided with one of the six annual Sumo tournaments held across the country. Three of these are in Tokyo, whilst the others are in Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka. Each tournaments only last 15 days and so we were pretty lucky to have this opportunity. When the tickets were released one month before the start of the tournament we went online to buy them as quickly…
